Dan Albas

Before entering public life, Dan was the owner of Kick City Martial Arts, responsible for training hundreds of men, women and youth to bring out their best. For his work on child safety and awareness, Dan was the recipient Penticton’s “2005 Young Entrepreneur of the Year” award. Dan served as campaign chair for the United Way of the South Okanagan-Similkameen in 2006-7 and 2010-11, both times surpassing their fundraising goals.
Dan and his wife Tara reside in West Kelowna, where they raise their four daughters.

Dan has been a member of the federal Conservative Party of Canada since 2006, where he volunteered as director and later President of the Okanagan-Coquihalla Conservative Association. Locally Dan supported and saw firsthand how one can make a difference by the work and example of the Hon. Stockwell Day.

As a community leader, Dan was elected to Penticton City Council in the 2008 municipal elections as a first time candidate. He topped the polls, winning with 5656 votes. Through his work as a city councillor, Dan has proven himself to be a strong constituency worker delivering results and standing up for what he believes in. Dan took a leading role on public safety by proposing aggressive panhandling and dog control bylaws; he proposed a core service review that greatly helped his community to balance the books and to focus on core services by eliminating wasteful or unnecessary spending. The Penticton core service review has been described as the “gold standard” by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. Dan also created a Penticton Politics website blog and has continued to offer new and creative ways for constituents to communicate on important issues. Dan Albas is consistently recognized as one of Canada’s top ten most active MPs on twitter and also continues to write a weekly column published in many local newspapers.

On June 28 of 2012 Dan became one of the first MP’s in recent history to have a Private Members Bill (Bill 311) to become law with the unanimous all party support of both the House of Commons and the Canadian Senate. Bill C-311 “An Act to amend the Importation of intoxicating liquors Act” amended a prohibition era law to prevent the free trade of wine over provincial borders. June 28 of each year is now celebrated by wine producers and lovers as `Canadian Wine Day`. In September of 2013 Prime Minister Stephen Harper named Dan as the new Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board. As the Parliamentary Secretary Dan was influential in the passing of Bill C-21, the “Red Tape Reduction Act”. Dan’s ongoing work on regulatory reform and red tape reduction has led to a nomination for the coveted “Golden Scissors” award from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

Dan currently serves on the joint Senate/House of Commons Scrutiny of Regulations Committee and also the House of Commons Public Accounts committee. Most recently Dan has championed the new Aquatic Invasive Species regulations coming into force that will help better protect British Columbia fresh water lakes from invasive zebra and quagga mussels. Dan’s Parliamentary record includes being recognized by the Ottawa Citizen in 2015 as one of only five MPs in Canada with a 100% voting attendance record. Locally in British Columbia Dan has also consistently been one of the lowest spending MPs in BC on office and administration related costs despite operating two offices to better serve local constituents.

Dan is honoured to serve the residents of Okanagan-Coquihalla as their Member of Parliament. He has made good on his commitment to establish a personal blog with his website, where he chronicles his activities as the Member of Parliament for Okanagan-Coquihalla.
